Below are select examples of research projects that I have worked on and/or managed, illustrating the depth and diversity of my experience.
Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI)
Senior researcher
I work across the organisation’s three thematic areas of “Securing a Home”, “Making a Living” and “Expanding Political Space”. I lead a project mapping evictions in the Johannesburg inner city and researching the courts’ application of evictions law. I am also involved in a scoping study on food insecurity. I am a member of the resource mobilisation team and the social media team.

Contributor to a website on Evidence-informed Decision-Making (EIDM) during COVID-19 in Africa
The objective of the website was to highlight high-quality evidence synthesis from Africa and how it has influenced decision-making on the pandemic.

Consultant project manager
I managed the South African Mental Health Education Programme implemented as part of the Sanofi Unlimited Education grant, and in support of the National Department of Health’s Mental Health Education programme. The objective of the programme was to train 1000 mental health care professionals through 34 workshops on the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with mental illness.

Lead researcher on a scoping study
The objective of this scoping study, which was funded by the Hewlett Foundation, was to understand the extent and nature of existing impact evaluation capacity in sub-Saharan Africa, especially East & West Africa, for both the production and use of impact evaluations.

Senior research consultant
I was the lead researcher for a SADC study on the vulnerabilities of boys in school, specifically as it relates to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The project consisted of fieldwork in four countries (Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi and South Africa). The project was funded by the Swiss Agency for Development Co-operation (SDC), UNICEF and the South African Department for Basic Education.

I chaired this committee which was responsible for the programme development of the conference, defining scope, screening abstracts, and doing programme placements.

Lead researcher on a rapid evidence review
This evidence review for Frontline AIDS (formerly the International HIV/AIDS Alliance) focused on the effectiveness of eHealth interventions targeting key populations worldwide in strengthening their access to and knowledge of HIV prevention, care and treatment. The project took the form of an evidence map and review of reviews.

Co-lead of an evidence synthesis project
This project focused on co-production of evidence syntheses products with decision-makers in the context of ecosystem services and how these can be used to support poverty alleviation in sub-Saharan Africa. It includes the production of an interactive evidence map and four rapid evidence assessments (REAs), and was funded by DFID, NERC, and the ESRC.

Co-lead of a systematic review
The review focused on what works to increase women’s labour market participation in high growth/male dominated sectors in LMICs and was funded by DFID.

Consultant
Managed two rapid assessments and gap analyses of post-violence care available at health facilities in the eThekwini municipality and the UMKhanyakude municipality in Kwa-Zulu Natal province (South Africa). This was part of the DREAMS initiative funded by PEPFAR, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and GirlEffect.

Deputy Director and Country Manager (Malawi), Building Capacity to Use Research Evidence (BCURE) Programme
UJ-BCURE was a 3-year programme funded by DFID with the aim of supporting the capacity of government officials in South Africa and Malawi to increase the use of research evidence in decision-making. I was the Country Manager for the work in Malawi and also Deputy Director of the programme. In South Africa, I worked closely with the Policy Unit of the Department of Water and Sanitation on the different aspects of evidence-informed decision-making in the development of their Water Stewardship Policy.

Work included a systematic review of the effectiveness of agricultural interventions on small-holder farmers in Africa.
The Centre for Critical Research on Race and Identity (ccrri) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal
Working with the ccrri on a research project funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
The project investigated the obstacles to the supply and diversity of entrants into professions in South Africa and is part of a bigger study titled “Education and Emancipation”.
Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) legislative impact assessment study conducted by Batseta Consulting, Johannesburg
Independent Senior Researcher with Batseta Consulting that was awarded the research contract by the GPL.
This study was commissioned by the GPL to evaluate the socio-economic impact of select legislative enactments between 1994 and 2008.
South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Johannesburg
Commissioners’ Documentalist (Commissioners’ Report Writer)
As the SAHRC’s second seven-year term drew to a close in September 2009, the outgoing Commissioners commissioned a critical, reflective, and self-evaluative report on the achievements and challenges of the SAHRC during this term.

Senior Project Officer and Post-Doctoral Associate
I was involved in a study with colleagues from the UKZN Law Faculty on race and the law in post-1994 South Africa. The aim was to understand the continuation of racial classification and race thinking in South African legislation.
“Birth to Twenty” (BT20) research project, University of the Witwatersrand

BT20 is a longitudinal study on the health and development of ± 3 500 children in Soweto, Johannesburg.
