Teaching

I have fulfilled a range of teaching and mentoring roles, select examples of which are listed below.

Mentoring

During 2016 as part of the UJ-BCURE programme, together with colleagues from UJ, I worked with the Policy Unit of the South African Department of Water and Sanitation on the different aspects of evidence-informed decision-making in the development of their National Water Stewardship Policy.  This was done in collaboration with WWF and the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS). For more information view this short film on EIDM and Sustainable Water Management.

Academic co-ordination

I was the academic co-ordinator at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) for the Global Studies Programme (GSP), an international social science Masters Programme that was offered jointly by the University of Freiburg in Germany and UKZN. As part of this Programme, I participated in the assessment of MA theses.

Teaching and supervision

I have taught students at undergraduate and postgraduate level on subjects such as contemporary social theory (especially theories of race and racial identity), urban and rural development, and research methods. I have also successfully supervised a B.A. Honours research project in Development Studies.

Teaching Support

I was the South African workshop coordinator for a series of DfID funded workshops run by the Social Science Research Unit (SSRU) from the Institute of Education (University of London). These workshops were held at the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies, University of Johannesburg, and were attended by members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The workshops were aimed at building capacity for the systematic evaluation of educational interventions for HIV/AIDS prevention in southern Africa.
